Session Report for Friday, 08/04/2006

13 Players, 9 Games

Tsuro

(Johan, August, Dave, Marshall)

This was the first game of Tsuro for all involved so we had to figure out how to play from the rules. To be honest the rules are dirt simple (place a tile move all pawns bordering on that tile, if a pawn hits the end of the board you're out). But there's this business with the Dragon tile that we couldn't figure out but it didn't seem to affect the game, just the reshuffle, and there are enough tiles that you don't have to reshuffle - go figure.

Anyway, I'm not sure if I like the game yet or not. It's simple and fun but I get the impression that it's just a matter of stalling for as long as you can until a single play sends you careening across the board and out of the game. In other words, a lot of delay and then WHAM you're out.

It plays in like five minutes though and can acccomodate 8 players so I'd definitely try it again. Agents has it on their open game shelf so we can grab it and try it any time.

Roborally

(Tracy, Kevin L., Karen, August, Johan, Dave)

Bohnanza

(Marshall, Scott, Shelly, Greg)

Bohnanza is a relatively cute and harmless game. Not too much strategy because I've yet to see a better idea than to trade whenever possible no matter the relative value of the trades. When everyone is playing this strategy it comes down to luck of the draw. No matter, it also plays faster that way too and there is some enjoyment in asking if anyone wants your stink!

Modern Art

(Kevin K., Scott, Shelly, Greg, Marshall)

Man do I really suck at this game. I can't figure it out, I've read all the strategy articles and adjusted my play but still... nuthin'

I guess I should adopt Kevin's strategy which won him the game. "Do the opposite of what I would have done when I lost." I can't wait to try that out!

Polarity x2

(Kevin L., August)

Killer Bunnies

(Karen, Dave, August, Johan, Steve)

Railroad Tycoon

(Kevin K., Marshall, August, Kevin L., Shelly, Greg)

This was a pretty interesting game of Railroad Tycoon. I won the bidding for the first turn for $14. I built a link to Louisville and delivered a good for 1 pt + 1 pt for first delivery + 3 pt delivery bonus. This shot me out into the lead in the beginning

August started in the NE around New York, Kevin L. also started in the NE and build around the hump of the appalacians into Toronto (this can actually be a very lucrative area to build). Greg started in the mid atlantic and built south. Shelly started in the south atlantic. While Kevin K. decided to make a go out of New Orleans.

In the mid game all of the east coast players passed me up as they made long deliveries but Greg faltered a little bit as he built into Shelly's area and deliveries dried up. Kevin K. never really got off the ground connecting a lot of cities but only with a level 2 engine.

At the end of the game it was very tight between me, August, and Kevin L. Kevin L. had issued a few too many shares so he had to move back too far. It came down to whether or not August had made his tycoon bonus (nobody else made theirs). It turns out his bonus was for the most money but Greg had him beat so I edged out August by a couple of points.

Grave Robbers

(Tracy, Dave, Johan, Kyle R.)
