Session Report for Friday 9/5/2008

15 Gamers 12 Games

Tower of Babel

(August, Bart, Katie, Marshall, Courtney)

Tower of Babel saw pretty regular play after it was introduced in the first session of 2006, but it's been out of rotation for about a year and a half now. I've started to get the itch to play it again so I've begun bringing it to the sessions and tonight it hit the table.

I hate to play games with varient rules but in the case of ToB? I made an exception because I didn't want to play with the power cards. I'd come to the conclusion that they actually detract from the game, and consensus on BGG seems to agree. It turns out they were added by the publisher, not Knizia himself, and word was the game plays better without them. After this game I'd have to agree. I don't see using the power cards ever again, they're just plain broken.

So, anyway, most of the players were new to the game but ToB? is easy to teach, and a couple of rounds in everyone had the hang of it. I tried and succeeded in collecting four of the craftsmen disks for an endgame bonus of 20 points. That should have been enough to win but August edged me out with some solid scores for his workers.

Race for the Galaxy

(Greg S., Boomer, Alex A., Alex H.)

Ra

(August, Marshall, Richard H.)

After ToB? I hopped into a three way game of Ra. I'm beginning to realize that three is probably the best number for Ra. With five, so much happens between your turns that you feel like you're being whipped around out of your control. With three, the more frequent turns give you some extra ability to react to the board. I pretty much ran away with this game when I got a lucky river draw on the first epoch I ended up with eight rivers and I got a flood each round. In the first epoch I also got the most pharoahs, and eventually I got all eight monuments. The only thing I never got was a civ. Even with three Ra is still a game with a lot of luck and this time the tiles seemed to come my way.

Medici

(Bart, Katie, Courtney, Ryan)

Twilight Struggle

(Ryan, Boomer)

In the Year of the Dragon

(Marshall, Bart, Courtney, Richard H., Katie)

The highlight of this game was Bart seemingly running away with it then forgetting to save up any money for the tribute event. That meant that he had to lose four of his people, which is huge. It left him with only one person and two empty palaces (one of which would be lost to decay). Still, I thought he was going to win it, but I didn't notice until final scoring that Richard had been stuffing monks into his palaces, and had managed to keep lots of people alive. His huge end game bonus pushed him by Bart and me securing the win. All in all, a very enjoyable game.

Pandemic

(August, Alex A., Alex H., Greg S.) (August, Paul, Alex A., Greg S.) (August, Georgia, Russell)

Well I played three games of Pandemic and did not even win any one of them. I like the game even though we lost the three games. In the first two games the epidemic cards came quick and we did not survive after the third due to the multiple outbreaks. In the third game, we had three players. The two roles that were not play were the Medic and Researcher. We was doing pretty good, so I thought, and three of the four viruses was cured and one was eradicated. We had a plan in two turns we was going to win. The game changed that by causing an outbreak that the eighth outbreak to end the game.
