Scenario Description

It has been a long road. Your lord and master, Grand Magistrate Theobold Matthies, has sent you and your companions to the lands on his northern border. Rumors of an uprising have reached all the way to his halls implicating his former comrade-in-arms and the lord mayor of Tradegate. He has sent you, his most trusted advisors and stalwart swordarms, to travel discretely northward to the town of Tradegate to learn the truth of these unpleasant tidings.

Your journey has been arduous with the dullness of the trail and the cool misty autumn weather plaguing you at every step. Your only solace has been the infrequent tavern and coach house along the way to gather a hot meal and a warm dry bed. Ahead in the distance you spy a potential haven for the night, the sanctuary of Respite. As you look forward to settling into one of its famous hot spring baths, you note that there is no sign of movement or illumination in the town.

Characters

The Grand Magistrate’s Contingent:

Carron Wystornin, a season veteran of several campaigns presently assigned as sergeant of the guard. He views this field assignment as his one chance to finally move up the chain and claim the rank of lieutenant. Thus far in the journey he has kept a tight rein on the group as its commander, barking orders whenever anyone gets out of line. Some have become concerned about how far he will go to make this mission a success.

Rigil Kentaurus serves on the magistrate’s advisory council representing the college of high wizardry. The elven magician has garnered few friends on the council due to his aloof attitude. Many have decried the wisdom of having a wizard on the council, fearing the power he possesses and questioning where his loyalties rest. Rigil’s hope is that this mission will demonstrate once and for all his fidelity to the council.

Valdarin Morganson, an expert marksman, he has served as a scout for the Grand Magistrate for over 16 winters. As an observer and scout he is trusted absolutely by his lord and master. His modest and affable nature has made him well liked among his companions old and new. He has become someone that each member of company has come to count on.

Alia Sonjoro was a last minute replacement to the expedition, taking the place of Randal McNallish?, a well traveled merchant. This sudden shift in personnel has left Carron distrusting the presence of this graceful and well spoken diplomat. Several members of the company feel concerned for her safety since she bares no arms or armour.

Korus Ringingsteel has survived more engagements than the rest of the company combined. Once a young acolyte that fought in the orc wars to defend the dwarven home lands, he later moved on to serve as a physician in the magistrate’s army. A grouchy curmudgeon with a thirst for life that is well liked by all, except the wizard who finds him grating and crass.

Folar Mistwalker was personally recruited for this expedition by the council for his vast array of knowledge in a multitude of subjects. His dark and brooding demeanor leave most feeling uncomfortable and unwilling to engage him. The loremaster and sage speaks little to others and when he does so he displays an unsettling economy of words in a gravely voice.
